The InterPlex, a hybrid-style evidence-based publication and collaborative community, focuses on the interdisciplinary, intercultural and interconnected. We are a globally minded 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts.
We seek to weave together diverse spheres of evidence-based knowledge and worldviews by way of thought-provoking and actionable content that resides at the intersection of science, society, technology, health, culture, policy, and the living planet.
With an emphasis on complex systems and foundational questions, we aim to help break down rigid boundaries and dissonance that exist between different disciplines, cultures, demographics, and within ourselves. We foster dialogue and a long-term “big picture” approach to interdependent issues that impact our present, our future, and the understanding of our place in the cosmos.
The InterPlex aims for non-linear positive impact on complex, interconnected issues, and on foundational research. Our approach seeks to promote critical thinking, combat misinformation and dissolve gratuitous divisions that exist between siloed academic and social structures, at all scales.
By fostering interdisciplinary and intercultural collaboration and dialogue, and engaging the public and policy makers through compelling and understandable evidence-based, nuanced and actionable content, we envision an interconnected global community that supports and participates in a dynamic process of scientific truth-seeking that crosses disciplines and cultures.
I am an independent interdisciplinary researcher and writer with a background in physics. I am the Founder of Unbounded World, an initiative which provides an integrated approach to ecological and cultural preservation, and The InterPlex, a new hybrid-style publication and collaborative community that focuses on the interdisciplinary, intercultural and interconnected.
I am a marine biologist and a full-time research professor at the National University of Colombia in Bogota, where I formerly served as head of the biology department. I was also the director of the San Andres Campus of the National University, which sits within San Andres island in the Caribbean sea. I have a doctorate in environmental and evolutionary biology.
I am a member of the working group IOCARIBE-ANCA (Harmful Algae of the Caribbean), the Pool of Experts for the United Nations World Oceans Assessment, and a senior researcher and leader of the Coastal Ecosystem Modeling Research Group. I was the president of the sixth International Mangrove Macrobenthos and Management conference, MMM6, which was held in Cartagena in 2023. My research interests include harmful algal blooms, mangrove ecology, coastal marine ecology, and interdisciplinary collaborations on natural-based solutions.
I developed The InterPlex website, shaping its structure, design, and digital experience. My focus was on creating an accessible, responsive platform that reflects the project’s interdisciplinary spirit — connecting science, art, and society through thoughtful design and clean functionality.
Seasoned advancement professional with more than 15 years of frontline major gifts experience in academic medicine, higher education and independent schools. I am a member of the Board of Directors for The InterPlex.
I have a great passion for food, family and travel. Always excited to help bridge divides and make the world a better, more harmonious and understandable place.
I am a particle physicist and complex systems science researcher, and lead the “econophysics and sociophysics” group at the National University of Colombia – Bogota, where I am a full professor and am currently serving as the director of the physics department. I also lead an interdisciplinary and intercultural water monitoring network called “REMONA,” which is built on principles of complexity and citizen science. I’m interested in collaborating on research into social, biological and artificial systems.
I am an anthropologist, folklorist, journalist, and filmmaker. I hold an M.A. in folklore from Indiana University Bloomington and a B.A. in anthropology, with minors in history and Latin American studies, from the University of Oregon. I am currently a fellow of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, teaching English in Peru through 2026. I am also a contributing editor for The InterPlex.
My work sits at the intersection of scholarship and media. I strive to tell impactful stories about underreported people and places through incisive research and creative endeavors. Whether at a keyboard or behind a camera, at home or in the field, I’m always looking for the next chance to apply my skills to creative, investigative, and impactful ends.
As a researcher, my ethnographic work has focused on transculturation, cultural reproduction, biocultural heritage, and language revitalization among the Kamëntšá and Inga peoples of the Sibundoy Valley in southwest Colombia, my primary fieldsite. I have conducted additional projects on culturally responsive pedagogy in Senegal, biocultural heritage in the Afro-Colombian Pacific, and food and memory in Kurdish restaurants in Greece. As a journalist, I’ve covered topics like Indigenous autonomous movements in Mexico and Colombia, the insurgent history of desert blues in the Moroccan Sahara, and the trans community of Bogotá.
My skills include writing, editing, ethnography, qualitative research, Spanish-English translation, transcription, videography, filmmaking, audiovisual production, reporting, and open-source investigation. Beyond these, I’m always striving to develop new skills and expertise.
