I am an academic with interests in diverse fields, with most of my research focused at the intersection of nonlinear science, statistical physics, and computational biology. I have also led a cluttered and restless life that includes (a little too frequent) travel that has, among other things, taken me rafting down the Grand Canyon, and on long road trips (memorably, São Paulo to Buenos Aires, and back) with highs (the Potala in Lhasa) and lows (the Dead Sea). My Erdös number is 4 and Nobel number is 1.
I retired from the Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2018 after teaching there for 32 years, in the School of Physical Sciences, and the School of Computational and Integrative Sciences. Between 2018 and 2023 I was Visiting Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the IIT Delhi, and Honorary Professor in the Department of Physics in 2024.
I am an elected Fellow of TWAS, The World Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, and the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, and served as President of the Indian Academy of Sciences from 2016 to 2018. Currently, I am Honorary Professor in the Department of Physical Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Berhampur. I am a Fellow of the New India Foundation (2023-25) and have written extensively on D.D. Kosambi, while coincidentally holding the D.D. Kosambi Chair in Interdisciplinary Studies, University of Goa.
As Editor of Publications of the Indian Academy of Sciences between 2013 and 2015 I started the journal Dialogue: Science, Scientists, and Society. I have a long-standing interest in books and publication: I was the Managing Editor of the Texts and Readings in the Physical Sciences (TRiPS) Series of textbooks as well as the online book distribution portal, Scholars without Borders.
